The Schönbrunn Zoo was built by Adrian van Stekhoven in 1752 at the suggestion of Emperor Francis Stephen I of Lorraine, spouse of Maria Theresa, as an imperial menagerie next to Schönbrunn castle. The core of the park was a pavilion, where the imperial couple could have breakfast. That is why the 13 vivariums were layed out like pieces of a cake. |
